Favorite Rome Bus RoutesWe have put together a series of favorite bus routes, using the interactive feature of the Rome ATAC site. Click on a sub-menu item on the left to choose the route. While the site is in Italian, it is fairly easy to navigate. Click on a route number and direction. When the ATAC map appears, you can scroll down to the bottom of the map to see the various stop locations. You will also see a "P" and an "A" on each route. The "P" is where the route starts. The "A" is where it ends. Clicking on a stop will bring up a closer view of the stop and, at the top right, the stop schedule When a route opens in a separate page, look at the area above the map to see information on any temporary route changes or deviations. You will see the route number and the place it is going TO. You'll also see a gray button with the words "Altri Percorsi..." Click on this button to see route deviations and the return route(s). On the route line you'll see little yellow dots. Click on these to find out the expected arrival times at that location. To look for a different route, look to the right side of the map area and you will see a field that says "Trova Linea", just type in a bus route number here and it will give you a new window with bus direction selections. On the route maps, check the "Bigletti" box and click on the map to see all ticket sellers throughout Rome. Menu route names show the general compass direction of the route. Be aware that the stop locations and routes can and do change, but ATAC normally keeps them up to date. At the moment, we are putting together maps for routes 81, 87, 492, 116, 118, 64, 63, 40.
Route 81 This route goes from a terminus east of San Giovanni to a terminus near the Vatican Museums. It includes stops near or at Piazza Venezia, Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Circus Maximus, Palatine Hill entrance at San Gregorio, San Clemente and San Giovanni. When going in the west to east direction, it also includes stops near Piazza del Popolo and the Mausoleum of Augustus. When going from east to west, it includes stops near Piazza Navonna, Pantheon
Route 87 This route goes from a terminus just behind the Palace of Justice (next to Castel Sant'Angelo) to a terminus well south of San Giovanni. It includes stops near Piazza Navonna, Pantheon, Piazza Venezia, Colosseum, San Clemente and San Giovanni.
Route 492 This route is primarily an East-West route. It goes from a terminus to the northwest of Vatican City to a terminus east of Termini Station. It includes stops near Vatican Museums, Castel Sant'Angelo, Mausoleum of Augustus, Piazza Navonna, Pantheon, Colonna Marcellus, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Barberini, Baths of Diocletian and Termini Station.
Route 75 South (Tour 6) This route is related to our final tour in the video. This will take you from Termini station to Mary Maggiore. This is then the route you can take after we visit Santa Pudenziana to the Cavour Metro or Colosseo stop. If you have difficulty climbing stairs, this is the bus you want to take from Pudenziana to the Colosseo and then walk the long way back up to San Pietro in Vincoli. This eliminates stairs and the walk up is not steep from the Colosseum.
Route 116 This is a small, electric bus that goes through the heart of the historical district. It goes from a terminus near Borghese Park, to the end terminus south of Vatican City. It has stops near Piazza Barberini, Spanish Steps, Sant'Andrea della Fratte, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navonna, Pantheon, Camp di Fiori. Be aware that you may have to change buses several times if using this, as the batteries often die.
Route 118 This route is a good way to tour the Appian Way. It has a terminus south of Circus Maximus and another at the end of the Appia Antica Park. It has stops near Circus Maximus and in many places along the Appian Way. It is a very good and cheap alternative to the semi-private Archeobus, which follows almost the same route.
Route 64 This route runs from a terminus south of Vatican City to Termini station. It includes stops near the entrance to St. Peter's Square, Piazza Navonna, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Venezia, the Quirinale. This route is also known for crowded buses and pick-pockets.
Route 63 This route runs from a terminus near Isola Tiberina to a terminus well north of Borghese Park. It includes stops near Teatro Marcello, Piazza Venezia, Trevi Fountain, Palazzo Quirinale, Piazza Barberini, and Villa Albani.
Route 119 This is a circular route. There are actually two routes, depending on the day. This primary route runs from Piazza del Popolo to Piazza Venezia and back. This includes stops near Spagna, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Venezia, Largo Argentina, and Colonna Marcellus.
