Ostia Antica is the ancient port outside of Rome. While tens of thousands flock to see Pompei, this ancient town is almost unknown to tourists. It is an easy 45 minute train ride and is included in all metro tickets and passes. While the frescoes in Pompei are much better, the tile mosaics in Ostia are beautiful. On Friday evenings in the summer plays are performed in the ancient amphitheater.
